In 2007 South Park released their first ever fully continuous trilogy of episodes, with season 11’s Imaginationland. While the show had done a handful of two-parters before, including Cartoon Wars and Go God Go in the season immediately prior, this felt like one of South Park’s most ambitious pieces of storytelling in series history. The entire concept of Imaginationland is massive, whisking the kids away on a fantasy adventure unlike anything we’d seen in South Park up to that point. But not only was this trilogy ambitious and well received, eventually it was recut and re-released on DVD and streaming, advertised as a single MOVIE. This new version included extended sequences, uncensored jokes and visuals, and occasionally entirely new footage. Imaginationland remains some of my favorite episodes that South Park has ever offered, so today I wanna talk about the inception of the idea, the differences in the quote unquote movie version, and how this style of storytelling affected the show moving forward.
